VALENTINE'S DAY GIFT GUIDE
So many holidays in this short month. Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, Facebook appointed Friend’s Day? and I think President’s Day is lurking somewhere in the shadows. A month of celebrating, indulging, and gift giving…if that’s your thing. It is most definitely my thing. I have been known to spend weeks stressing over the perfect thoughtful gift for my people. I also like to send random books and magazine subscriptions. Something I haven’t done in a while, but need to start up again. If you want to make someone’s day, send them a well thought out book. This simple gesture is always so appreciated.
That being said, it’s also important to treat yourself sometimes. For the past two years, I’ve cut my shopping by about 85% of what it used to be. I just don’t want or need all of the stuff anymore, and it has been great. My purchases are deliberate and usually serve a purpose. That doesn’t mean it isn’t nice to throw in a little indulgent purchase every now and then just for fun. In honor of Valentine’s Day, I’ve compiled a list of items I’ve recently bought or things I want to get my hands on.
FLOWERS- Some people consider cut flowers a waste of money because of their short life span. I disagree. A vase of flowers elevates any room, and gives me genuine joy. Also, you don't have to spend a fortune to buy nice stems. I frequently purchase grocery store blooms and place them around my home. They are well worth the $10 because little details make me happy. I notice it everyday, and can sometimes be heard telling them how great they look. I also have a friendly inner competition to see how long I can make them last. My record is a little over two weeks with white hydrangeas, which will be engraved on my headstone. If you want to be more practical go for a potted plant instead.
BATH-Lately, I’ve started to really enjoy bathtime. As a long time lover of the quick shower, this is a revelation. Now I want all of the products and potions that go along with creating the perfect relaxing bath so I never want to get out. Starting with bubble bath and bath salts. If you have a loved brand let me know. Until then, I've picked out a Barr-Co bath salt purely for it's packaging.
BAG- In simplifying my life, I’ve downgraded my purse size as well. I don't want to deal with the hassle of the monster bag and all of the junk it holds any longer. I wish I could be a phone/wallet kind of girl, but sadly i will never leave my brush and concealer behind. I bought the black version of this guy in December, and it forces me to only carry the necessities. (I can even fit a whole bag of Lemonheads in there when it's full.) It doesn’t fit my new camera though, so I will be on the hunt for a little bit bigger crossbody bag to bring on my next trip.
BOOKS-I read a lot of design blogs and digital magazines looking for work/life inspiration. Way too many in fact. Stepping away from my computer and flipping through a book or magazine is something I’ve been trying to incorporate into my life a little more. I'm not sure how to handle the bookmarking of favorite images though. I haven't found a system that works well, and I can't bear to tear pages out. If you don’t want to commit to a full subscription, go for a single edition. I can spend hours looking at the magazine section of the bookstore. Another healthy outing away from my computer.
FASHION- I try to ONLY buy one pair of new shoes a season. Two is normally my reality, but still a nice change from the days of my floor to ceiling shoe cabinet. I think these sweet flats will be my Spring shoe of choice (actually I want these too.) I like wearing neutrals and live in button down shirts. These kicks would be perfect to upgrade my simple wardrobe. Also, I need this check dress and those earrings. Nuff said, no explanation. I just do.
While you are out showering the people you love this Valentine’s Day, don't forget to pick up a little something special for yourself and me too (see outline above).
