WEEKEND IN AUSTIN
On a weekend away in Austin, Texas I had big plans for walks in the park, stand-up paddle boarding, music, and food. Unfortunately after day one, the weather didn’t cooperate with my idea of a good time. Instead of outdoor activities the itinerary was adjusted to accommodate the weather, but we still managed to have a great weekend. Here are a few highlights of a rainy freezing weekend in Austin.
Hamilton Pool Reserve was at the top of my list of places to visit in Austin. It’s a little bit of a drive outside the city, but I think well worth it. I visited towards the end of winter, so I’m sure it wasn’t as lush as it could have been, but it was still a cool area to spend a few hours. Luckily, it was the first stop of the weekend and the weather was mild and sunny.
The overhang, pool, and waterfall were the highlight of the reserve, but we continued onto a short trail taking us to the river. If you wanted to spend a day there be sure to pack a lunch and swimwear. There is a small beach area that would be lovely, as long as it isn’t too crowded.
We went to a few of the typical tourist food spots, but I loved Jo’s Coffee. I think we ended up eating breakfast there twice, at the downtown location. I’m a big fan of breakfast, and the meal was simple but so so good. There are many good spots to eat at in Austin and food trucks to try, but for some reason Jo’s stood out to me.
While I was visiting, it was the weekend of the Oscars. Since the skies were gray we decided to watch a nominated film in a boutique movie theater. Violet Crown Cinema boasts a full service bar, food offerings, and comfy reclining chairs. It’s the way all movies should be viewed. Not too shabby. In keeping with the Oscars theme, we ended up at a bar playing Academy Award Bingo. It was the first time I watched the award show in its entirety, and beer and bingo make everything better.
Just like the movie theater we found a specialty bowling alley to spend a few hours and have a few drinks. The Goodnight has a restaurant, bar, and swanky bowling. It’s open late and they have fun events like Air Guitar competitions. It was a little pricey for two people, but would be better with a few friends to split the bowling costs.
Of course there are great bars, fun shopping, and incredible music to be found in Austin, but articles on those topics are easy to find. These were just a few things that you may also want to check out while you are there. It's a fun city with lots to keep you occupied.
